Hi, we’re Glen and Claire.
We are a married couple in our early 30’s and despite having great jobs and a comfortable life in the UK, back in 2014 we decided to give it all up for a nomadic life – travelling the world and earning money along the way.
Are we crazy?
No. We just realised that the 9-5 life wasn’t working for us and so we opted to trade it in to embark upon a worldwide search for adventure. Trying our hand at living on a super tight budget and with only the possessions we could fit in our backpacks. It was AMAZING!
Three years on we have learnt a huge amount about travel and ourselves and are now living a life of part time travel, basing ourselves in the UK and travelling as often as possible (roughly to 6 countries per year). We’re finding that this suits us better than the ‘all or nothing’ approach to travel and means that we get to have the best of both worlds.
We love it and we think you will too!
After meeting in 2004 and getting hitched in 2009, we initially followed the same path that everyone is encouraged to take and settled into what we thought would be a lifetime of 9-5 living, spending the majority of our time either working or commuting, sleep waking our way though the week and living for the weekend.
Though we had great family, awesome friends and good jobs, we quickly became disillusioned with what this version of life had to offer.
Was this really how we were supposed to live until retirement?
We already knew that we were never going to be parents (but that’s a whole other story) and without the normal family life to anchor us to the UK we began to wonder whether we could really live this way for the next 40 years.
We had toyed with the idea of giving it all up to travel several times but in January 2014 we finally had our fuck it moment and decided to stop dreaming and start doing.
We decided that we could and should find a new way to live that allowed us to spend more time together and learn about the world from something other than biased news coverage.
We took the leap and found quickly that the things we had in England weren’t worth nearly as much as the experiences we had on the road.
After quick trips to the Dominican Republic and Lapland, we backpacked around Asia, Australia and New Zealand for a year before returning home to attempt to create a life with more balance. We’re slowly getting there but still miss being on the road full time!
What’s on our blog?
Our blog details what we did to prepare for our initial trip and documents our journey around the world. It explains why we think part-time travel is the best kind of travel, how we manage to visit so many countries every year and how you can too.
We really hope that we can inspire you to live the life that you want, whatever that may be. Please don’t fall into the same trap as us – there is so much adventure to be had out there!
Are we rich?
Sadly not. Way back in 2014 we sold everything we owned and quit our jobs to travel the world, living off of our savings and attempting to make money online.
We found that we could make our money go far abroad but worried about the future. What if we wanted to come back to the UK eventually? What would happen when we ran out of money?
After a year of carefree living we opted to return home and top up our cash supply before heading off with our backpacks again, only to find that we didn’t particularly want to give everything up for a second time. Awkward!
These days we’re based in the UK, earning regular salaries and travelling part -time. We don’t do anything you couldn’t do too and we really hope that reading about what we get up to (and how we do it as cheaply as possible) will help you to see more of the world that we have come to adore.
We might not always live in the UK (our feet are definitely getting itchy) but for now, follow us as we attempt to satisfy our wanderlust from home! 🙂
