Update: Where we are now and our plans for 2016

What a year 2015 turned out to be.

By the time the clock had struck midnight on the first day of what would go on to be the most exhilarating year of our lives we had already been officially unemployed and on the digital nomad path for a couple of months. But on 1st January 2015 we set off with nothing but two backpacks, two economy tickets to Thailand and a dream to be financially independent to the extent that we could live anywhere in the world without “working for the man” by the year end.

We had a growing business that we’d been nurturing for several years and we were excited to expand our income streams with online ventures. We told you how we make money and we also shared stories of how other people living their digital dream kept their heads above water too which turned out to be really useful.

You followed our woes as we prepared to leave England and we shared everything from our pricey vaccinations to our frustration at how difficult it would be dealing with visa issues on the road.

Then once we settled into life on the road we wrote about our adventures in Lapland, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. We even shared our first big travel mistake with you.

And then we stopped writing.

What nobody tells you about the digital nomad lifestyle is just how exhausting it can be. With arranging travel, accommodation, researching destinations and dealing with practicalities like currency and visas it can sometimes feel like there’s no time to do anything else. Add in that everything needs to be done on a tight budget and it almost seems like a full time job at times.

Around three months in we realised that we were spending way too much time in front of our laptops and not enough time enjoying the places we were visiting and we decided  that something had to give – for us that was our blogs.

It seemed like the right time to take a ‘blog break’ whilst we travelled around the amazing country that is Myanmar and after enjoying our free time so much we got a little bit used to it and…. that was pretty much the last you saw of us!

So what have we been doing since then?

We have travelled onto another 7 new countries, each one more mind blowing then the last, and we can’t wait to share all of the details of those incredible adventures with you over the coming months.

We have carried on expanding our business and we really did make something of those online ventures! I wouldn’t say we are financially independent yet but we’re well on our way and more determined than ever.

We bought a house!

A visit back to England late in the Summer gave us the opportunity to remember why we love home so much and to see just what he had left behind. It also enabled us to see that no matter how many countries we visit, no place will ever be home without the people the we love nearby.

We were also alarmed to see that the housing market in our home town, and in fact the entire country, had gone nuts in the time we had been away and that if we weren’t careful, we could end up being out-priced in our own town and potentially unable to return to the area that we love later on. We also had a large amount of money burning a hole in our bank account from the sale of our last home.

And so a decision was made.

We love the security of having an investment that will always be waiting for us and the comfort of knowing that even when we’re on the other side of the World, we always have a home to come back too – one that we love!

Owning it does present some annoying practicalities to overcome, such as how are we going to pay the mortgage? Will we rent it out when we’re travelling? How will we afford to travel? But we have some very good answers to all those questions which will be revealed over time…

Plans for 2016

Currently we are using our new home in England as a base for our travels and are taking the opportunity to explore European cities that we’ve never bothered to visit before. (We recently had a stunning trip to the Brecon Beacons in Wales and just last week we were pounding the pavement in gorgeous Lisbon, Portugal!)

Lisbon travel

How cool is this tram in Lisbon?

Coming up just next week I’m off skiing in France and not long after we have a luxurious trip to Mauritius planned to celebrate Glen’s 30th birthday. With jaunts to the USA, Amsterdam and Venice in the works we’re sure that this year is going to be just as exciting as 2015! Life is good.

If 2015 was all about throwing ourselves into the nomadic life, 2016 will be seeking to find a balance between our lives as digital nomads on the road and our days as just Glen and Claire at home surrounded by our amazing family and friends.

And now is a most excellent time to find that balance seeing as we recently became godparents to a child that we adore, and in November we have the absolute honour of being Best Man and Maid of Honour at our best friend’s wedding!

Any balance is going to have to find room for blogging as we promise to keep you fully updated going forward and we have also committed to branching out with our online ventures and building on what has been an unexpected success.

If you want to keep up with our progress and learn more details about our business and how much money we make as digital nomads don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter where we give you the low-down. We can’t wait to share our updates with you.

And so that’s us! What are you guys up to this year? Catch us up in the comments below, We’d love to hear from you!
